Donna, the owner of Adorn the Fawn, is the most bubbly person you can imagine. I actually didn’t even need to speak to her to know that; seeing her smile and the bright pink top that she was wearing when we first met said it all.
Her admiration for design and fashion is a life-long love story that she turned into a business in 2015. Adorn the Fawn sells international designer luxury labels from Germany, Portugal, Denmark, London and New York for girls aged 0 – 16.
Hi Donna. So good to catch up. Adorn the Fawn – can you tell us what Made you open your beautiful online shop?
I LOVE fashion!! Before having children I used to constantly search magazines and the Internet to find amazing pieces for myself. After having the girls though, I found myself scouring the internet more and more to find unique fashion for them instead. It’s such a thrill finding that special piece and having it arrive at the door step! The girls and I equally enjoy planning where we can go to dress up!
This together with a lot of friends and mothers from school asking me where I found my girls’ clothes set the stage for Adorn the Fawn. I felt there was a gap in the Australian market to buy stand out international designer fashion.
What is the story behind your business name? It sounds very mystical.
What I love most about my business is that I can share my love for (my) children and fashion with others around the globe. Helping them find pieces they love has become equally thrilling for me to finding a piece just for myself!
I have always adored the word ADORN – “to make more beautiful” and the sound and meaning of FAWN – “young deer”. When I realised that these two words put together truly tell the story of what the store is all about, the decision was made.
Let’s get a bit deeper into the brands and pieces you combine in your store.
We predominately stock hard to source international fashion labels and accessories. Have you heard about Wolf & Rita, Raspberry Plum, Molo, Cavalier or Petite Papinelle? These are just some of the amazing brands that we have been able to bring to Australia. The store has everything from quirky to elegant over to classic.
What’s interesting is that although I am buying for the Australian market, many of our customers are actually from overseas. I guess they are just like me: we love locating and sourcing highly sought after pieces and don’t want to be constrained by geography when creating the perfect outfit!
Is it difficult to source all these international, quirky boutique brands?
You’d be surprised how much gorgeousness you can find when you start looking. I also believe that it is very important to support smaller brands rather that those mass market, fast fashion retailers.
I love connecting with all those designers and brands from all over the world. My only regret is that am not able to attend all the amazing international trade shows to meet my gorgeous designers and people that I only know through emails.
Your passion for what you do sparks right out of your eyes. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? What did you do before Adorn the Fawn?
I actually studied Interior Architecture. I guess fashion was naturally the next step from there. Until this day I am most inspired by great design and creative colour pallets. It doesn’t matter whether that is for our home or on our bodies. As long as it is fun and about being different in the most positive way, you will be sure to see me get my hands on it.
You are very busy having two school kids, running your own business while also working part-time in another job. What does your perfect day look like?
I’d go out for a wake up coffee, then stroll the lane ways (ideally in Venice, my most favourite city in the world) and of course indulge in shopping!
If money was no issue, how would your life change?
Oh boy! Well let’s start with a huge, light filled space where each of my family members has their private living quarters. This place would be surrounded by a beautiful landscape and also include a creative studio that I’d share with other amazing businesses. After moving in, I guess it will have to be a holiday somewhere warm and sunny!!!!
Sounds amazing. May we move in with you?
Of course. That should be fun!
